An image of a politician stripped to his underwear in Mexico parliament is viral in India with a different narrative. A Facebook page “Mahua Mitra fans” has shared the photo with the caption, “In Mexico parliament, a member of Parliament removes all his clothes in Parliament during the debate… “You are ashamed to see me naked, but you are not ashamed to see your people in the streets naked, barefooted, desperate, jobless and hungry after you have stolen all their money and wealth”..he told the Parliament, What a courageous man, this is how it should be”.
While the image in the post is true but the claim isn’t. The post has received over 9 K share and 20K likes.
A Hindi daily website called, socialistexpress.page has written an article on this. The article is published on 14th OCT with the heading, “मेक्सिको की संसद में एक सदस्य ने ऊर्जा के निजीकरण के ऐतिहासिक विधेयक पर अपने सारे कपड़े उतार दिये” (Archive). The post is shared by hundreds of Twitter /Facebook users, the same can be found here and here.
We did a reverse image search of the viral image and found a picture, dated back to 2013 from the Parliament of Mexico. The man in the viral image is MP Antonio Garcia Conejo.
According to an article published by BBC, a Mexican MP has stripped off in Congress to protest against controversial legislation that opens the state-controlled oil sector to foreign investment. Antonio Garcia Conejo, from the PRD, stripped down to his underwear to show his opposition to the bill. The MP was talking about the new energy law that allows private oil and gas companies to drill for oil and gas with the state-run firm Pemex in exchange for a share of the profits.
We also found a youtube video posted in 2013 by the Personajes México channel.
Conclusion: So the viral image does belong from Mexico but the context given for protest is Misleading. MP was protesting against the new Bill with regards to Oil and Gas extraction. Also the incident took place in 2013, almost 7 years back.
