Delhi BJP leaders used 12-year-old image to target AAP govt over water crisis

New Delhi: There have been reports of water scarcity in some parts of Delhi lately. According to news agency ANI, the locals of Sangam Vihar, New Delhi are facing water crisis, and they are dependent on tankers for water supply. However, a photo of a large crowd gathered around a water tanker and climbing on it is going viral across social media platforms claiming it to be of the present situation from Delhi.

Former Union sports minister and Delhi BJP leader Vijay Goel shared the viral picture from his official Twitter handle and claimed ‘दिल्ली में पानी का हॉल कुछ करो भैया केजरीवाल (Situation of water crisis in Delhi, do something brother Kejriwal) (Archive)

Harsh Sanghavi, BJP MLA Surat, National Vice President BJYM, also shared the same and claimed ‘ये हाल कोनसे राज्य का है? (Which state conditions is this?)’ (Archive)

Aaj Tak used the same image in a news report “दिल्ली: पानी न मिलने से 50 परिवारों ने छोड़ा घर, AAP विधायक ने कहा- सब ड्रामाpublished on 2016. The same image was used by many around 2016, find here, here. Find more claims here and here.

FactO Check: 

A reverse image search of the viral image directed us to Alamy website, a stock photography agency. According to Alamy, the picture was taken in 2009. Sheila Dixit from the Indian National Congress party was the Chief Minister of Delhi in 2009.

As soon as the image went viral, the official Twitter handles of Delhi Jal Board and AAP has replied to Vijay Goel’s tweet. Refuting the claim, AAP said, Vijay Goel Ji,  Are you nostalgic that you’re sharing photos from 2009, or was it a deliberate attempt to defame Kejriwal Govt?” 

Conclusion: The viral image is from 2009, and Sheila Dixit was the Chief Minister of Delhi then.
