Did PM Modi talk about digging underneath Mosques in the viral video? No

Written by Facto News Desk

A short video clip of Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing a rally in Uttar Pradesh is in circulation on the social media platform. Those sharing the video are linking it to the ongoing issue of the Gyanvapi Mosque.

The prime minister is heard saying in the video: अरे हमारा उत्तर प्रदेश तो ऐसा है यहां भी खुदा है, वहां भी खुदा है, इधर भी खुदा है, उधर भी खुदा है , कल भी खुदा था ,आज भी खुदा है , जहा नही खुदा है वहा भी खोद देंगे “

[Translation: In our Uttar Pradesh, it’s dug up here and it’s dug up there too, here is also pits and there is also pits, yesterday also there were pits and today also there are pits, and if there are no pits somewhere, there will dig up pits there also)

The video is suddenly viral after Hindu plaintiffs have claimed to have found purported Shivling in the Wazu Khana (Ablution) area of Gyanvapi Mosque in a court-mandated video graphic survey. On 16 May, a Varanasi court ordered the sealing of the Wazu Khana area. On 17 May, Supreme Court directed the protection of Shivling and also ensured that namaz should not be stopped within the mosque.

We verified the viral clip of the prime minister and found it cropped from a long video of 2017. In the video, the prime minister is talking about the roads of Uttar Pradesh taking a dig at Akhilesh Yadav’s then state government.

The social media users are sharing the video with the Hindi caption that reads: “यहां भी खुदा है , वहां भी खुदा है , इधर भी खुदा है, उधर भी खुदा है , कल भी खुदा था ,आज भी खुदा है , जहा नही खुदा है वहा भी खोद देंगे (कार सेवक)”

FactO Check:

Using InVid We Verify chrome extension, we extracted the keyframes of the video and reverse searched them. The search led us to a video of more than one-hour duration streamed live on 5 March 2017 on BJP’s verified YouTube channel. The video is titled: “PM Shri Narendra Modi addresses public meeting in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh”.

We listened to the whole video carefully and found the viral video is clipped at the timestamp of  24.28 minutes. The prime minister talked about the poor state of the road in Varanasi criticising former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his government.

He can be heard saying in the video: “मैं उत्तर प्रदेश में जबसे घूम रहा हूं, खासकर के सांसद बनने के बाद…

(Translation: Ever since I have been touring Uttar Pradesh, especially after becoming MP, our MPs also come to meet me and they too say, and they have a very interesting style. They said, Sir, you don’t know about Uttar Pradesh. I said, tell me. Arey, our Uttar Pradesh is such that, “It has been dug up here, it has been dug up there. It has been dug here, it has been dug up over there and wherever it hasn’t been dug, it will be dug up soon”. Now, who has made this condition? )

PM also talks about the problem of hanging cables in Varanasi and his initiative after becoming MP to lay the cables underground. Attacking Samajwadi Party, he said when the cables were laid underground, the state government did not repair roads fearing credit will go to Modi.

Conclusion:

Therefore, it is evident from the above findings that the video being shared with the claim is out of context and misleading.
