Uttar Pradesh: Bhoomi Poojan at Ayodhya for Ram Janmbhumi Mandir was scheduled for 5th AUG and PM Narendra Modi was in Ayodhya to lay the foundation of Ram Temple. As per officials, 200 invitations were sent for this historic event. UP CM Yogi Adityanath is looking after the preparations himself. While talking to Sweta Singh of AajTak, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath made a claim, where he says “Crime rate in Uttar Pradesh has reduced in the last 3 years”. The same claim was also published by @IndiaToday. (Archive)

FactO Check:

We found this claim suspicious and surfed the NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau) website, the official source, and found a report published in DEC 2019 for the year of 2018. We found that the IPC (India Panel code) crime rate in Uttar Pradesh has not reduced since 2016 and it continued to increase, where there is slight dip in SLL(Special and Local Laws) cases between 2017-2018.

Total IPC/SLL Crime
2016-494025
2017-600082
2018-585157

IPC Crimes
2016-282171
2017-310084
2018-342355

SLL Crimes
2016-211854
2017-289998
2018-242802

On page numbers 9,10 and 11, there are details of the same, and according to the report Uttar Pradesh is worst among all other states in India.

After Nation Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) published its report, India media has covered this story of Uttar Pradesh being worst state in term of crime. The Hindu published a report “Uttar Pradesh tops list in crimes against women“, where NDTV wrote “Crime Rate High In UP, Shows Data. Top Cop Pins It On “Large Population” in January 2020.

UP govt has recently released data based on NCRB 2018 report and claimed that Uttar Pradesh has less crime rate than many other states based on its large population. Uttar Pradesh holds 19% of total Population of India.

Conclusion: According to NCRB, the crime rate has not reduced in Uttar Pradesh in the last 3 years, whereas UP govt compared the report with other states, based on population and claimed that the crime rate is better than other states, despite the number of crimes has been increasing.
