The central government had announced a change in the vaccination policy with effect from the 21 June. Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the nation said all citizens above 18+ will be vaccinated free of cost. The central government will procure 75% of the vaccine doses from vaccine makers, easing the burden of the 25% doses allotted to the states. The states will be provided vaccine free of cost and the rest 25% will be given to the private sector at the price fixed by the government.
Now, it’s being claimed by the Union ministers and other leaders of the ruling party that on the first day of the revised vaccine policy, India has set the world record of vaccinating the highest number of people in the world.
Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan in a tweet claimed with “86.16 lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses administered on June 21,” India has set a world record of “highest-ever single day coverage across the globe.” (Archived)

Union Minister Smriti Irani also claimed the same on Twitter, “India administered over 8 million doses on day 1 – highest ever number clocked by any Nation in a single day.” (Archived)

National spokesperson of BJP Sambit Patra also joined the bandwagon. He tweeted, “Highest ever single day vaccination achieved in the World so far.”

We found the data being given is true about single-day highest vaccination of COVID-19 doses in India, however, the claim of setting the world record is misleading.
India clocked its highest number of over 8 million doses on June 21. According to Our World in Data, the same day, China administered 20.80 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. On average China has administered more than 10 million doses per day since May 14 and in June, it is administering around 20 million doses per day.
India as of June 23, has vaccinated over 29.46 crores of its population according to the ministry of Health and Family Welfare (M0HFW). While according to the Global Times, China has become the first country in the world to have administered more than 1.01 billion doses by June 19.
Conclusion: The claim of setting the world record of administering the highest COVID-19 doses in a single day is an exaggeration and completely false. The vaccination in India has been slow because of various reasons from the shortage in supply to vaccine hesitancy, however, it has picked up the pace since June 21. India is now administering more than 5 million doses per day.
