Fact Check: No, PM Modi didn’t say he was a thief

Written by Hritik Mishra

A 10-second video clip of PM Narendra Modi addressing a huge crowd at an election rally is viral across all the social media platforms with misleading claims. In the video PM Modi can be heard saying “जब मैं छोटी चोरी करता था, उस दिन अगर मेरी माँ ने रोका होता तो मैं इतना बड़ा लुटेरा न बनता (when I used to do petty theft, if that day my mother had stopped me, I wouldn’t have become such a big robber)”. Several social media users have shared this viral clip with the same message as above.

A Twitter handle by the name ‘Adharma_Dharma’ shared the same 10-second viral clip of PM Modi which has, as of now, viewed by over 20k people with the caption that reads; Something finally he said Truth

FactO Check:

A reverse image search of some keyframes of the video and relevant keyword search has directed us to a full 57-minute long YouTube video of PM Modi’s speech that he addressed during the West Bengal election at Siliguri in April 2021. We listened to PM Modi’s full speech and found out that he was not talking about himself but was narrating a story. The video has been trimmed into a 10-second clip to give it a different meaning and make it look like PM Modi has accepted that he was a thief.

What did PM Modi say?

Accusing the TMC govt. of corruption in various schemes, and alleging that TMC middlemen are taking bribes, PM Modi in his speech at 39:35 minutes said, “Brothers and Sisters! when we were kids we heard the story of a dacoit who was sentenced to be hanged by the neck till death. When asked about his last wish, he said he wants to meet his mother and the administration prepared the arrangements so that he can meet his mother before death. When he met his mother he grabbed her and bit her nose. When people asked him why did he do that, he replied, when I used to do petty theft if that day my mother had stopped me, I wouldn’t have become such a big robber and wouldn’t have to face this sentence and Didi (Mamta Banerjee) is saying what’s the big deal into taking 100, 200 and 500.”

Conclusion: The viral clip has been trimmed from a 57-minute speech of PM Modi’s election campaign with misleading claims.
