Fact Check: Viral claim of dead body of Corona patient thrown in Ganga

Written by Abdul M

Patna: COVID19 cases are growing rapidly across india, Patna has just reported 734+  active cases. In recent times, a  photo is going viral across social media claiming that a body of a corona patient is being dumped in the Ganga river.

A parody twitter account ‘@i_theindian’  tweeted 4 photo’s of 2-3 men on a boat throwing away a dead body in the river with the caption, “Sickening images of dead bodies of #COVID19 patients being dumped in river Ganges caught on camera in #Patna. Dumping bodies ensures death count remains low. There’s no outrage or prime time debates as #Bihar is ruled by double-engined – JDU and #BJP.”  (Archive)

The post went viral on social media and many Facebook pages posted the viral claim.

FactO Check:

We found the claim to be partially true. The same is also Fact checked by IndiaToday. This is not the first time when unclaimed bodies are dumped in Ganga River. PMCH(Patna Medical College and Hospital) is on the bank of the Ganga river and its regular practice is that the hospital staff dump the unclaimed bodies in river .

But was it a body of a Corona patient?

No, According to one of the photos published on Hindustan times, clicked by photographer Parwaza Khan of HT, the caption of the photo says “Patna Medical College Hospital staffers dispose of an unclaimed body in the Ganga near Kali Ghat on Tuesday.”.

Hindustantime / Parwaz Kahn

According to our research, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) and AIIMS are only COVID-19 hospitals in Patna. PMCH is not COVID-19 hospital. So the claim of Corona patients dead bodies are being thrown in Ganga river is found to be false.
