Hindus didn’t qualify West Bengal 2019 police SI exam? No, the claim is misleading

The West Bengal Police Recruitment Board (WBPRB) announced the final result for the post of Sub-Inspector of Police (Armed Branch and Unarmed Branch) exam 2019, on 18 June. The exam is conducted in two stages — first, Combined Competitive Written Exam followed by a personality test/interview in the second stage. A selection list of the candidates is in circulation on social media with the claim that only Muslims got selected in the final result.

A Twitter handle by the name Trunicle posted a selection list of 50 candidates, most names in the list are from the Muslim community. The caption of the post reads, “West Bengal Muslim police Pvt ltd? Will these policemen follow the law of land ?” The selection list is titled “Bengal appeasement” and claims “strangely Hindus DID not Qualify”. (Archived)

The  Madhya Pradesh state president of Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morch (BJYM), Vaibhav Pawar also posted the selection list. The caption along with the post reads, [Translation: This merit list of police recruitment in Bengal shows why Hindus are migrating from West Bengal. Mamta Bano is pursuing the journey from #KhelaHobe to making Pakistan.]

Several Twitter and Facebook users posted the selection list with the same claim but with varying captions.

FactO Check:

The selection list in circulation is not fake, however, the claim of selecting only Muslim candidates is misleading. We checked the website of the West Bengal Police, the final result was declared on 18 June for the recruitment to the posts of Sub-inspector of Police [Armed Branch (AB) and Unarmed Branch (UB)], 2019.

A total of 668 candidates made into the merit list; however, the merit list was prepared based on social category. We checked all the categories and found candidates of all communities making it into the final list. The viral list on social media is of only OBC-A (UB); however, there were selections in nine other categories.

There were 18 selections in the OBC-A (AB), 50 in the OBC-A (UB), 13 in the OBC-B (AB), 34 in the OBC-B (UB), 38 in the SC (AB), 109 in the SC (UB), 11 in the ST (AB), 29 in the ST (UB), 94 in the UR (AB), 272 in UR (UB). In the category OBC-A (AB), and OBC-A (UB) the candidates are from the Muslim community. The same list from the West Bengal police website is attached below:

Why OBC-A list has candidates from the Muslim community?

The West Bengal government enlists 171 OBC communities of which 111 are Muslims.  Overall 80 communities (72 Muslims) come under the OBC-A (most backward) category with 10% reservation and 91 (39 Muslims) into the OBC-B (backward) with 7% reservation.  Therefore, 97% of Bengal’s Muslims are beneficiary of the OBC quota. The given data are sourced from The Quint and Scroll.in.

Conclusion: The selection list viral on the Internet is only of the category OBC-A (UB), however, there were selections in other categories. Therefore, the claim of only Muslim candidates being selected in the final list for the posts of Sub-inspector of Police is misleading.
