The takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban has caused a humanitarian crisis in the country. There have been many images and videos of people fleeing from Afghanistan going viral on social media. Now, an image of passengers being transported in a military cargo plane is being shared with the claim that Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 has airlifted 800 people from Kabul, Afghanistan.

Facto News found out that the claim about the image is false. The image is of C-17 Globemaster III evacuating people after Super Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in 2013.

A Twitter user Archana Dalmiya posted the photo with the caption that reads: “IAF C-17 evacuates 800+ people from #Kabul”.

An archived version of the same claim by Twitter users can be found here and here.

A Facebook user Durgesh Tripathi also posted the photo. The caption along with the post reads: “IAF C 17 with 800 people airlifted….a record. That’s a train load almost. The previous highest was 670. This is from Kabul Airport today. Long Live India”.

FactO Check:

On conducting the reverse image search we found that the image used in an article on the website of the United States Air Force. The website goes by the name Pacific Air Forces and the article was published on 17 December 2013.

The credit to the image is given to U.S. Air Force and the caption along with the image reads: “More than 670 Tacloban residents sit onboard a C-17 Globemaster III before being evacuated to Manila following Super Typhoon Haiyan, which hit the Philippines on Nov. 17, 2013.”

However, amid the crisis, several countries are evacuating people from Afghanistan. Coincidently India and the USA evacuated people using the aircraft C-17 Globemaster.

As per the news agency ANI, the Indian Air Force used C-17 to evacuate Indian officials from Kabul, Afghanistan. The plane landed in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

According to the website Defense One, U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III safely evacuated some 640 Afghans from Kabul late on Sunday.

Therefore, it can be concluded with the above findings that the claim about the image is misleading and false.
