Karnataka: A heroic rescue attempt by Muslim youth was communalized

Published

on

Karnataka: In a heroic attempt, three Muslim youth rescued a man, who jumped in to the Netravati River, attempting suicide. According to the The News Minute (TNM) report , the incident happened near Panemangaluru bridge, Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.  When Nishant (28), a resident of Kalladka jumped in to the river,  Mohammad, Arif, Shameer, Thouseef, Zaheed and Mukhtar from Bantwal  jumped in and brought Nishant out of the river alive. Unfortunately, Nishant succumbed in the government hospital in Bantwal.

“I just wanted to save his life. I got a call saying that someone has jumped into the river and I immediately came to the bridge and jumped into the river to try and rescue him” .  (-Mohammed, one of the rescuer and a local fisherman told TNM )

The  video of the men rescuing Nishant went viral on social media.

Hours after the video went viral, a screenshot of an alleged tweet by BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje claiming that, (translated from Kannada-)”Received an information that jihadis had allegedly murdered Hindu organisation’s Nishanth from Kalladka”. I have already asked Amit Shah to initiate action against the jihadis” was doing rounds in social media giving the incident a communal spin and accusing the men of murdering Nishant.

Responding to the alleged screenshot, MP Shobha has tweeted that,” I have not made any statement or tweet of this nature trying to portray the edited tweet as mine”.

The screenshot was shared by several Twitter users.

SP BM Laxmi Prasad from Dakshina Kannada said that they have started investigating the matter. The police are investigating if the tweet was posted by Shobha Karandlaje or some miscreants have edited the tweet to spread communal hatred.

Conclusion: While many were appreciating the courage of the Muslim youth, who risked their lives to rescue Nishant, it is very sad to see that some are trying to give the incident a communal spin and mislead people.  The police are investigating the tweet. The post will be updated in the future with the details of the police investigation.

Responding to Kangana’s statement, Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena said that if Kangana feels unsafe in Mumbai, then she should not come to the city, to which Kangana responded that she would come to Mumbai on September 9 and challenged anyone to stop her. Following the events, many social media users and political leaders have appealed to the Central govt. to provide Kangana security. Just before her arrival in Mumbai, the Central govt. has granted Y plus security to her.

Several social media users have pledged their support to Kangana. Meanwhile, Karni Sena has come forward to pledge their support to Kangana. According to The Week  and TOI, Karni Sena said its members will provide security to Kangana Ranaut and escort her from airport to her home. Since then, a picture of convoy of vehicles is going viral across social media with a claim that, in order to protect Kangana Ranaut, Karni Sena left for Mumbai with over 1000 vehicles.

A parody account of Kangana posted these fake photos which got over 2K RTs.

A Facebook user, “Awadh Bihari Verma”  has posted the same picture in a public group  “Sudhir Chaudhary” with a claim, कंगना राणावत के सम्मान में, 1000 गाड़ियों के साथ करणी सेना महाराष्ट्र रवाना। जय भवानी जय राजपूताना। अब देखो हमारी ताकत।।।जय श्री राम 🙏🚩“. The viral post has garnered over 7.6k comments and 15k shares.

Another Twitter user @AnjaliYadav007 shared the same images with the same claim in her handle.

FactO Check:

A reverse image search of the above images directed us to social media posts between 2016 and 2017.  A Facebook user “Barmer Congress” has shared this picture on 22 March 2016, with a caption, “Carcade of #RPCC CHief Shri Sachin Pilot and #AICC Secretary Shri Harish Chaudhary”.

A Twitter user @KrantiTiwari1 has tweeted the above image on March 22, 2016 claiming that the convoy is of Rajasthan PCC chief Sachin Pilot.

Conclusion: It is evident that the viral pictures are not from Karni Sena’s convoy reaching Mumbai. Old images are shared on social media claiming it to be of Karni Sena’s. The viral claims are false and misleading.

Another tweet by Ravindra Akolkar, says “One video of Barack Hussein Obama, throwing away the gift of Mr President is viral. “Archive

FactO Check:

Investigating the viral video, we split the video into frames and found it to be edited. In the 10 second video, the part where the gift box was thrown away has approximately 4 frames. We broke into 3 images and found that it is just a square that matches the color of the gift box.

We knew the video was during a state visit when Barack And Michelle Obama were welcoming Donald Trump on his inauguration. We did a keyword search to find the real video and found a video posted by TIME on Jan 20, 2017. At 1:01 of the video, an awkward moment happened between Michelle and Melania Trump after the gift exchange.  Michelle Obama talks about the whole incident in The Ellen Show. She explains to Ellen that it was an awkward moment for everyone there, as they generally do not exchange gifts during state visits. Watch at 00:45.

An article published by TIME in JAN 2018 also says that it was a state visit and there are security protocols to follow and everyone was cleared out. The gift was completely unexpected and Michelle was not sure of where to keep the gift. In the below video at 7:23, we can see Obama taking the gift and going inside and returns for the photo ops.

Conclusion: The viral video is found to be edited. It is not related to ongoing #BlackLivesMatter protests.
