Kerala children praising Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) to the tune of National Anthem shared with malicious intent

Written by Abdul M

Kerala: An old video of a group of Muslim children singing to the tune of Indian National Anthem is going viral across social media. The video is from Kerala and it is believed to be from a school event celebrating Eid Milad-Un-Nabi, also known as Mawlid and Eid-e-Milad which is celebrated on the occasion of Prophet Mohammad’s birthday.

On May 19, 2021, news anchor and journalist Amish Devgan retweeted a similar claim shared by a Twitter account with the caption “Secular Kerala Reinvented National Anthem” and changed the Nationa Anthem to “Jana gan man Adhinayak Jai he, Majhab Bhagya Vidhata”.. BJP National Spokesperson Sambit Patra also retweeted Amish Devgan’s tweet and said, “Is this TRUE ??SHOCKING!!”. Find more similar claims here & here

The same video was also shared on JAN 2020,  claiming that National Anthem was distorted to a prayer song during national flag hoisting.

FactO Check:

We have received several requests to verify the video. We tried to find the origin of the video and traced it back to 2019. After examining the video carefully, we found out the flag being hosted is an Eid Miladun-Nabi or Milad-Un-Nabi’s flag(widely used during that time), not an Indian flag. Children can be seen holding Milad-Un-Nabi flag and other Islamic flags. Eid Miladun-Nabi is an Islamic festival celebrated across India and is believed to be the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad(pbuh). The children in the video are not celebrating Independence Day or Republic Day. The word ‘Nabi’ refers to Prophet and the students are singing a song praising Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) in the tune of Indian National Anthem.

Here is the translated version of some verses sung by the students. (Watch Video here)

1.Ihapara guru nabi mayakanore marhaba bagya sathatha (Welcome, guru prophet, leader, welcome )
2. Karunaya swalath salamukalode khalbakamullil nithya (You are in the heart forever with kind prayers and greets)
3.thirunabi bhoolokathin nethavayittulloru nidhiye (Prophet, you are a treasure, leader of the world)
4. Iha para sundara maniye, sundari amina poove (You are beautiful in the world and afterworld, beautiful flower of amina (mother))
5. Thwaha jayamani thwaha (Thwaha winner thwaha)  ‘Thawaha is one of Mohammad’s Name’
6. Ihapara guru nabi mayakanore marhaba bagya sathatha (Welcome, guru prophet, leader, welcome )
7. Nabiye nabiye nabi nabi nabiye (Prophet prophet prophet

Conclusion: The claim that children in Kerala distorted national anthem during national flag is false. The children have used the tune of Indian National Anthem to sing a song praising Prophet Mohammad and they didn’t hoist Indian flag while singing the song. The flag hoisted is a Eid Miladun-Nabi (religious) flag. We are not sure about Anchor /Journalist Amish Devgan’s intention in sharing a video from 2019 now. Being a journalist, he should have validated the news before passing it to his audience.
