A graphic of News7 is in circulation on social media. The graphic shows an opinion poll of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly election which predicts AAP winning 20-25 seats in the state. Surprisingly the number of seats predicted by the opinion poll for the AAP is more than BSP and Congress.
The opinion poll predicts 07-15 seats for BSP, 14-22 for Congress, 188-196 seats for the Samajwadi Party alliance and 144-152 seats for the BJP alliance.
Facto News found the viral graphic is fake and has been morphed by merging graphics of other news channels.
AAP leader, Nitin Tyagi, posted the morphed graphic on Twitter with the caption that reads: “उत्तर प्रदेश में @ArvindKejriwal की नीतियाँ और @SamjayAzadSIn की मेहनत से बढ़ता हुआ @AamAadmiParty का जनाधार । नतीजा इससे बेहतर होगा ।”
(Translation: @ArvindKejriwal policies in Uttar Pradesh and @SamjayAzadSIn hard work is increasing mass base for @AamAadmiParty. The result will be better than this.)
The morphed graphic is in circulation on Facebook also.
We first searched about the channel News7 and found it is a Chennai based Tamil-language news channel. Therefore, any possibility of the news channel broadcasting an opinion poll in Hindi is negligible.
The anchor in the viral graphic is Anila Mangalassery, on conducting a reverse search of the viral graphic we came across a video uploaded on YouTube on 13 November 2016 by Manorama News, a Malayalam-language news channel. The image of the anchor used in the viral graphic is extracted from this video.
We investigated further and found that the opinion poll used in the viral graphic is of News24 and the opinion poll has not given any numbers to AAP. The graphic is edited by interesting AAP numbers and by changing the Hindi Text. The channel uploaded the opinion poll on YouTube on 22 January and the source to the opinion poll is given to DB – Live.
The viral graphic is morphed by using the template of News 24, the logo of News7 and the anchor image from the video of Manorama News.
A comparison of the real opinion poll and morphed opinion poll.
Therefore, it is evident from the above findings that the viral graphic is morphed.
