No, Ladakh didn’t vaccinate 100% of its population with first dose as claimed by MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal

On 7 July 2021, the administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh in a press release claimed that the UT has administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to its 100 per cent population above the age of 18 years.

In the press release, though, they have claimed 100 per cent vaccination to its eligible population with the first dose, however, the administration has also appealed to all its residents and non-residents, who have yet not been administered with the first dose to get vaccinated at the earliest. Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, the Member of Parliament from Ladakh and the state President of BJP on 11 July in a tweet also claimed that the Ladakh has become the first Union Territory in the country to have 100 per cent COVID-19 vaccination with the first dose and he thanked Modi government for the achievement.

The tweet of the MP reads: “Ladakh became the first Union Territory to have 100% #COVIDVaccination with 1st dose. Thanks #ModiSarkar and heartiest Congratulations to people of Ladakh. Yes #ModiHaiToMumkinHai #SaafNiyatSahiVikas”. (Archived)

FactO Check:

We checked the data from the official website and found discrepancies in the claim being made.  The press release of the Ladakh Administration doesn’t specify the date on which the UT achieved 100 per cent vaccination with the first dose and also doesn’t provide the number of doses that helped them to become the first UT to achieve this landmark.

We checked the data from the Co-WIN, the website developed for the vaccine registration and which also records all the data related to COVID-19 vaccination. According to the website, Ladakh is still administrating the first dose of the COVID-19. On 7 July—the date of the press release—the UT  administered a total number of 680 doses out of which 361 were the first dose and 319 were the second dose. On 13 July 240 first doses were administered of the total 482 doses.

According to the data available on the website of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the total projected population estimate of Ladakh as of 30 June 2021 is 2,97,000. There are 2,29,908  people above the age of 18 who are eligible for the vaccination.

At the time of writing this story, according to the Co-WIN website, in Ladakh, a total of 2,46,022 doses were administered. However, out of the total, 1,84,319 people are vaccinated with the first dose. Therefore, as per the population data of UIDAI of the people above the age of 18, there still remains 45,589 people to be vaccinated with the first dose, which is nearly 19 per cent.

The claim of Ladakh administrating the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine to 100 percent of its eligible population is misleading. The Union Territory made this claim on 7th July but the state is still administrating the first dose as of yesterday.
