A video from a cricket stadium stand is doing the rounds on social media.  In the video, a man in the Australian jersey can be seen chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram”.

Several social media users have claimed tha the man in the yellow jersey is an Australian cricket fan and he chanted these slogans after Australia defeated Pakistan in the semi-final of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

Facto News investigated the video and found the claim is misleading.

An IPS officer, Rupin Shama, posted the video on Twitter. The caption along with the post reads: “पाकिस्तान के जले पर नमक छिड़कता एक ऑस्ट्रेलियाई jersey… From #Australia to #India after #Pakistan defeat in #ICCT20WorldCup2021″

A Twitter user, Rakesh Krishnan Simha, posted the video with the caption that reads: “No idea who this is or when. But seems to be an Australian cricket player saying “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” after !slam (sorry Pakistan) got defeated in the T20 World Cup. Waiting for another Aussie to say “PKMKB”.”

An archived version of the similar post of the same claim by several social media users can be found here, here, and here.

FactO Check:

Using the Invid WeVerify plugin, we fragmented the viral video into several keyframes and reverse searched a few keyframes. The reverse search led us to several news reports which confirm that the video is not from the semifinal of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup which was played between Australia and Pakistan.

According to an article published on 20 January 2021 on the website of the WION news, the video is from the Gabba test which was played between India and Australia from 15 January to  19 January 2021.

The article carries a similar keyframe visual and it also confirms that the video of the Aussie fans is from Day 4 of the Gabba Test.  The match was halted by a bit of rain and during the rain break, the fan in the yellow jersey was seen chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jay” and “Vande Mataram”.

We also found the viral video on Youtube uploaded on 20 January 2021 on the official channel of India Today.  The description of the video reads: “India’s historic win at the Gabba had every cricket fan cheering for Team India. Even this Australian fan couldn’t help but salute Team India’s exemplary win in Australia.”

Conclusion:

Therefore, it is evident that the video is not from the semifinal match of the ICC  Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
