Written by Md Mahfooz Alam

A video showing a gruesome mob lynching incident is in circulation on social media with the claim that the two Muslim youth were killed by the mob in the Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh.

The claim is being made on the backdrop of an alleged lynching incident that took place in Kaushambi district on Monday, 21 March in which a resident of Asrauli village, Zafar Alam was killed and his elder brother Noor Alam suffered severe injuries, who is battling for life in Hospital.

Media outlets reported that the incident took place when they were trying to flee after opening fire on the mob.

Facto News verified that the claim is misleading and the incident shown in the video is of 2020. The incident had taken place over child-lifting rumours when a person was lynched and six others were injured in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district.

The video is being shared along with the misleading caption that reads: हिन्दू संगठन के भिड़ ने 2 मुस्लिम युवकों की बेरहमी से लिंचिंग करदी, एक कि मौके पर मौत हो गई मरने वाले का नाम जफर बताया जा रहा हैं, घटना कौशाम्बी की भीड़ ने जफर को जान से मार दिया दूसरे की हालत नाजुक बताई जा रही है। ।। ये हो रहा हैं सबका साथ सबका विकास ।। #stopmoblynching”

(Translation: The clash of Hindu organizations brutally lynched 2 Muslim youths, one died on the spot, the name of the deceased is being told as Zafar, Incident Kaushambi mob killed Zafar, the condition of the other is said to be critical. , This is happening with everyone’s development. #stopmoblynching)

(Note: Due to the disturbing nature of the video, we have not added any link to the video in the story.)

FactO Check:
We extracted the video using the InVID chrome extension and reverse image searched a few of them. The result led us to an article about a lynching incident published in The Times of India on 5 February 2020.

The article in the English daily carries a video report with similar visuals and it says that one person was killed and six injured over a child lifting rumour in the Manawar area of Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh.

It also reported that the incident had happened over a money dispute when the labourers refused to work and pay back the advance payment. The victims were chased and brutally beaten by the labourers which led to the lynching of a man and injury to six others.

UP Police Fact Check Twitter handle quote tweeting a user’s tweet, who shared the video with the misleading claim, clarified that the video is from Madhya Pradesh and the incident had taken place in 2020.

Kaushambi Police has issued a press release on the incident of 21 March in Asrauli which says that the incident is related to a love affair.

According to the press release, Zafar had a fight with the locals of Mirpur village when he want to meet a girl. Later, his brother Noor opened fire and fought with the villagers, following which both the brothers were attacked, leaving one dead and the other critically injured.

Conclusion:

With the above findings, it is evident that the viral video of lynching is not related to the incident which took place in Kaushambhi, Uttar Pradesh on 21 March.
