Old video of scuffle between locals and supporters of a BJP MLA shared as recent

Written by Md Mahfooz Alam

Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, a video of News24 is in circulation on social media with the claim that a BJP leader and his supporters were thrashed by the locals. In the video, the anchor can be heard reading the news, the supporters of the MLA, Jai Mangal Kanojia, were beaten up by the locals in the Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh.

Facto News investigated the video and found it from 2018, therefore, the claim of it as a recent is misleading.

A Facebook user, Umesh Yadav, shared the video with the caption that reads: “जूते चप्पल हुये सीमा से पार BJP वाले फिर भी बोले हम है साढ़े तीन सौ पार”

(Translation: Shoes and slippers crossed the border,  and the BJP people still says that they will cross three hundred fifty seats)

At the time of writing this fact-check, the video had garnered around 40, 000 shares. The same claim shared by the other user can be accessed here.

FactO Check:

Since the video contains the logo of News24, using the relevant keywords, we searched for the video on YouTube. The video was uploaded by the verified channel of News24 on 5 December 2018.

The news video reports that the MLA Jai Mangal Kanojia after winning the election went to his Vidhan Sabha constituency after a long time, so there was an argument between the villagers and the MLA over not fulfiling the promises which led to a scuffle between the villagers and the supporters of the MLA.

We also across a news report published in Dainik Bhaskar 3 years ago. The Hindi newspaper reports that the incident had happened in the Barawa Raja village of the Maharajganj district when the MLA had taken out the ‘Kamal Sandesh’ Yatra.

Conclusion:

Therefore, it is evident that an old video of the MLA and his supporters being thrashed over unfulfilled promises is in circulation as recent ahead of the assembly election in Uttar Pradesh.
