Telugu Desam Party passed off image from Madhya Pradesh to target AP CM Jagan over oxygen shortage

Written by Vamc Vadranam

Andhra Pradesh: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to extend the Covid-19 curfew till May 31 as the number of cases continued to be on a steep upward spiral. It has recorded 18,767 new cases with a 7-day average of 20,000 cases as of May 23, 2021. The state govt.’s handling of the crisis, especially in providing adequate beds and oxygen supplies is heavily criticized by the opposition parties.

In May 11, 2021, the main opposition “Telugu Desam Party” from their official handle @JaiTDP tweeted an image of burning corpses and said, “Mr.Jagan Reddy, Are You Listening? AP is Suffocating, with Lack of Oxygen”. (Archive)

The tweet went viral and was retweeted by many social media users. We have also received multiple requests to verify the image and to give more details about it.

FactO Check:

A reverse image search of the picture tweeted by @JaiTDP has directed us to an article, Ludhiana’s corona death rate is highest in the country, Ahmedabad figures are also frightening”, published by News 18 on April 29, 2021. The image used here is from Madhya Pradesh, and not related to Andhra Pradesh. According to the article, two out of every 100 corona infected were dying in Punjab, Gujarat and West Bengal. Whereas in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, this figure of death has been more than 1 percent (Note: These numbers doesn’t represent the present situation)

Conclusion: Telugu Desam Party used images from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh to target the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh over oxygen shortage. The above image tweeted from TDP is misleading.
