Written by Vamc Vadranam

A video of police constable getting manhandled for shoplifting at a mall in Lucknow went viral across social media with a false claim that the cop is a Muslim. The video shows the mob restraining the cop as he wears multiple shirts under his uniform, trying to steal them. जिहाद हर जगह हर रूप में जिहाद” and misidentifying the cop as Salim.

Please find some other claims here, here and here

The same video is also shared by an YouTube channel “Khabar Ab Tak Ki” on February 27, 2021, with a caption, “लखनऊ में पुलिस वाला चोरी करते पकड़ा गया मॉल में खरीदारी करने गए सिपाही सलीम की चोरी के आरोप में हुई (Policeman in Lucknow caught stealing. Soldier Salim went to shopping in the mall and charged for stealing) Youtube Channel ‘Khabar Ab tAk ki’ wrote “सलीम का सिनेमा बन गया , लखनऊ: मॉल में खरीदारी करने गए सिपाही सलीम की चोरी के आरोप में हुई पिटाई,,,, ट्रायल रूम में वर्दी के नीचे चोरी कर तीन शर्ट पहन कर निकले सलीम की पोल खुली।”

FactO Check:

A keyword search on Google has directed us to an article by ABP Ganga on February 25. According to the article, the cop was beaten on charges on theft, as he wore three shirts under his uniform. When he tried to pass through the metal detector, the siren went off and the guards restrained him. Another article by Aaj Tak on February 26, 2021 states that a case has been registered against the guard, manager, and half a dozen people for manhandling the police.

Lucknow Police Commissioner DK Thakur said that the cop’s name is Adesh Kumar, earlier posted in Gomti Nagar. He is now suspended.

Conclusion: As per multiple news reports and police statements, it is now evident that the man in the video is Adesh Kumar but not Salim as claimed in the viral posts. The above claims are misleading, fake and islamophobic.
