Jair Bolsonaro is discharged after 23 days hospitalized for gut surgery

Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was discharged on Sunday morning (4), after spending three weeks hospitalized at DF Star Hospital in Brasilia.

Bolsonaro underwent 12 hours surgery on April 13 to treat a partial obstruction in the intestine caused by adhesions formed after multiple surgical interventions resulting from the stab wound in 2018.

During the hospitalization period, Bolsonaro remained two weeks at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he began recovery with oral feeding and daily sessions of motor physiotherapy. In addition, preventive measures against venous thrombosis were adopted.

Before leaving the hospital, the former president used his social networks to thank the medical team led by surgeon Claudio Birolini. “Thank you Dr Claudio Birolini and Team. I’ll be back home,” Bolsonaro wrote.

The surgery was necessary after the former president was ill during a liberal party (PL) event in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte. Initially, he was treated in local hospitals, but was eventually transferred to Brasilia, where doctors decided on surgical intervention.

The procedure, performed on April 13, aimed to treat a “intestinal subocclusion”, a complication that developed due to the multiple surgeries performed since the attack suffered in 2018.

This was Bolsonaro’s seventh surgery since the attack that marked his presidential campaign in 2018. The stab, which reached vital organs, required a series of interventions over the years to treat complications due to trauma.

The medical team pointed out that recent surgery was one of the most challenging, but the former president presented good clinical evolution during hospitalization.

With hospital discharge, Bolsonaro returns home and should continue in home recovery. It is expected to continue with medical follow -up and physical therapy.
