Haddad gathers with Trump’s treasure secretary in the midst of tariffs
In the midst of the tariff war promoted by Donald Trump’s government, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad met on Sunday with United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The meeting took place in Los Angeles, where the minister traveled this week to seek investments in DATA CENTERS (Data Center) in Brazil.
This was the first face -to -face meeting between the two authorities since Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. In the United States, the Treasury Secretary has a function equivalent to that of the Minister of Finance in Brazil.
Initially, the meeting was not foreseen on Haddad’s official agenda because the minister will only pass California before going to Mexico on Tuesday night (6). However, last Wednesday (30), the Minister of Finance announced the possibility of a meeting with the US Treasury Secretary.

“I received a return that he (Scott Bessent) is interested in starting dialogue with Brazil,” said the minister on Wednesday morning. At the time, however, Haddad stated that the meeting would probably be virtual and occur after his return to Brazil.

On Wednesday, Haddad stated that the 10% surcharge of the US government to Brazilian products and 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, which came into force in March, should be discussed. However, the Finance Minister stressed that commercial negotiations are being conducted by the Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services and Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin.
“We may even talk, but then the tariff negotiation at this time is the vice president (Geraldo Alckmin). The commercial part is being conducted by MDIC (Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce). But we have many matters to deal with the Treasury Secretary of the farm agenda,” said Haddad.
Haddad’s agenda
Haddad arrived on Saturday Los Angeles to present the new plan of the Brazilian government to invest in data center and artificial intelligence. The minister intends to emphasize Brazil’s leadership in renewable energy and explain the proposal to exempt investments in capital goods linked to information technology goods, a project that will still be sent to the National Congress.
On Sunday night, Haddad will have a dinner with international investors, offered by the Milken Institute, California Institute that promotes political and economic forums. On Monday (5), the minister participates in two panels at the annual conference organized by the Institute.
In Los Angeles, Finance Minister will meet with Google’s director (CFO), Ruth Poat. On the same day, the minister will travel to San José, near San Francisco, where he will meet with NVDIA Executive President Jensen Huang.
On Tuesday (6), Haddad will participate in a breakfast with Brazilian and foreign entrepreneurs and investors, organized by the American Chamber of Commerce for Brazil (Amcham Brazil). It will then have bilateral meeting with Amazon executives.
On Tuesday night, the Finance Minister embarks to Mexico. The trip ends on Wednesday (7), with a breakfast with Brazilians who work in Mexican companies or in Brazilian multinationals in Mexico. On the same morning, Haddad will have a meeting with Edgar Zamorra, Secretary of Treasury and Mexican Public Credit. According to the Ministry of Finance, the trip to Mexico focuses on the deepening of bilateral relations.
