Can only be a Pope? Is it a minimum age? Document opens possibilities
There is no age limit to choose from. There is a limit, however, to participate in the vote, restricted to those who are less 80 years old. The elected is usually one of the cardinals voting.
According to the Vatican, there are currently 252 cardinals, 135 voters and 117 non -voters. Traditionally, there is a limit of up to 120 cardinals voting, but the nominations of cardinals under 80 years old made by Pope Francis ended up raising this number – at the moment, 133 voters are expected.
In addition to the prerequisites, there are also some impediments to become Pope. One of them refers to canonical impediments, such as excommunication, public heresy, among others. Nor cannot apply for cardinally cardinals canonically (legally removed from office) or who have renounced. These cardinals cannot be readmitted during the vacancy period of the Pope.
The conclave should start at least 15 days after the Pope’s death. There is a possibility of postponing the date in 20 days – the final deadline for the vote to occur. There is no conclusion for the conclave, but in the last ten, the choice lasted on average three days.
