Janja criticizes Tiktok in a meeting with Xi Jinping and generates embarrassment in entourage

The first lady of Brazil, Janja Lula da Silva, caused embarrassment during the meeting between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) and Chinese leader Xi Jinping by asking for the word to criticize the Tiktok social network, one of China’s main digital platforms.

According to members of the Brazilian entourage, the episode generated a “climão” at the meeting, which did not predict formal speeches. The information is from the portal G1.

Janja would have taken advantage of the moment to express her concern with the “harmful effects” of the social network in Brazil, arguing that the platform algorithm favors the far right.

The first lady stated that Tiktok has been a tool for misinformation and political manipulation, representing a challenge for the country.

Also according to reports, Xi Jinping has reacted diplomatically, stating that Brazil has full legitimacy to regulate or even ban the platform, if it considers necessary.

However, Janja’s behavior was considered inappropriate by members of the Brazilian entourage heard by the portal, who evaluated the intervention as “” disrespectful “about the Chinese leader and his wife, Peng Liyuan.

The mention of Tiktok is especially sensitive to China, as the platform is at the center of an international dispute.

In the United States, the US government tries to force the sale of the Chinese company bytedance in local operations to an American company amid concerns about national security.

The episode contrasts with the climate of cooperation that marked Lula’s visit to China, resulting in the signature of more than 30 bilateral agreements in areas such as infrastructure, technology and renewable energy.

Janja’s stance, however, was seen as a “out -of -curve point” at a carefully planned event to reinforce diplomatic ties between the two countries.
