Milk served as a navy diver at a time when homosexuality was prohibited in the Armed Forces. He was one of the first admitted homosexual politicians of the United States, elected member of the San Francisco Supervisors Council, where he played a decisive role in the approval of laws that prohibit discrimination by sexual orientation.
Months later, in 1978, Milk was shot dead along with Mayor George Moscone by a former city supervisor.
United States President Donald Trump has taken steps to ban the presence of transgender people in the Armed Forces and dismantle gender diversity programs, claiming that they “undermine the leadership, merit and cohesion of unity.”
