Women should “use a burchin or swimsuits that cover more body parts,” said a statement from the ministry.

Outside bath areas, women should wear loose clothes and men should not walk with their naked torso.

In a very conservative Syria, few women wore swimsuits on public beaches.

The restrictions will not be applied, however, to clubs and private establishments considered luxury by the Ministry of Tourism.

There, “Western swimsuits are allowed within the limits of public decency,” he said.

The ministry also insisted on the need to wear “loose clothes and cover shoulders and knees” in public places, and avoid “transparent or very tight clothing.”
