Trump Tariffs: Senate articulates mission to Washington to preserve exports

The Senate Foreign Relations Commission reacted to the announcement of US President Donald Trump, who on Wednesday (9) imposed an additional 50% tariff on all Brazilian exports.

The commission chairman, Senator Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS), says that the board has been following the tariff agenda since the beginning of the current management and will reinforce the path of parliamentary diplomacy. “There are over 200 years of diplomatic and commercial relations with the United States. We have to seek pacification of this understanding so that our trade is not harmed,” he said.

According to Ian Bremmer, it is “difficult to understand” how the imposition of high tariffs on Brazil serves the national interests of the United States

Trad also said that the US embassy business officer – currently responsible for the diplomatic mission in Brazil – proposed the formation of a parliamentarians committee to go to Washington in search of direct dialogue with the American legislature. The mission is scheduled for September and is supported by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin.

Several Brazilian productive sectors showed concern for the new fare. The Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (Abiec) warned that the measure represents an obstacle to international trade and could compromise global food supply and safety.

Mato Grosso do Sul, for example, ended 2024 with a record production of more than 1 million tons of beef and was one of the largest exporters in the country. In the first half of 2025, the product accounted for 14.37% of all state exports, according to the Secretariat of Environment, Development, Science, Technology and Innovation.
