Lula criticizes unilateral tariffs in articles published in the international media
The president condemns the effects of protectionism adopted by great powers. According to Lula, unilateral tariffs “threaten the multilateral trade system,” “sink the global economy” and make the search for development unsustainable.
In both texts, Lula denounces the emptying of multilateral institutions and the loss of credibility of the UN, the WTO. He states that the rich countries did not fulfill the promises made at conferences such as COP15 and denounces that the promised climate help in Copenhagen was never delivered.
Lula points out that while the richest 1% have accumulated $ 33.9 trillion in the last 10 years, more than 700 million people still live without access to water, energy and food. He also makes a direct criticism of austerity policies, which, according to him, undermined the ability of states to protect the poor and fueled the growth of extremist movements.
The president recalls that Brazil occupies global leadership positions in 2025, with the presidency of G20, BRICS and COP30. According to Lula, the country’s performance in these forums is an attempt to “reconstruct multilateralism with fairer and more inclusive bases.” He defends diplomacy as the only way to contain inequality, climate crisis and armed conflicts.
