Federal Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) said on Friday he had attended a meeting with United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on August 13 days after the cancellation of a meeting between Bessent and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad.

“We had an excellent meeting with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. It is a unique opportunity to be able to talk about Brazil and the United States with someone so well prepared,” said the deputy on social network X.

Without detailing the content of the conversation, he defended in the post that “the friendship ties between Brazil and the US get even more strengthened”, presenting a photo alongside Bessent and influencer Paulo Figueiredo.

Haddad said on Monday that the meeting he would have with Bessent, and that he was scheduled for August 13, was unmarked by the US government, which the minister attributed to the result of articulation of Eduardo Bolsonaro.

Until last week, Bessent was treated by Brazilian authorities as a bet to unlock negotiations involving US fares of Brazilian products.

Prior to the cancellation of the meeting, a source from the economic team had stated, on condition of anonymity, that Bessent had a more moderate profile than the other main authorities of the Trump administration, and had a relevant participation in the final tariff negotiations with other countries.

Impted on a series of Brazilian products since last week, the US’s 50% tariff was justified by President Donald Trump’s government, among other reasons, as a response to what he called “witch hunt” against former President Jair Bolsonaro, sued for coup attempt.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is living in the United States, has kept contact with authorities in Washington in defense of his father, also preaching that in his view Brazil is experiencing an institutional crisis.

In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Eduardo Bolsonaro described US tariffs on Brazilian products such as beef, coffee, fish and shoes as a “bitter medicine” designed to contain what he classified as a uncontrolled legal offensive against the former president.
