In this week’s letter, employees pointed out how legal criteria to define Gaza as genocide had been filled.

In one excerpts, experts “express profound frustration with the scale, scope and nature of reported violations and their impact on civilians, especially women and children, and many are concerned that the UN office approach risks undermining the entity’s credibility as a leading authority in human rights everywhere.”

Employees consider it based on extensive UN mechanisms and independent experts -that the situation in Gaza “meets the elements of the convention for the prevention and punishment of genocide crime and believe that the UN office should reflect this assessment more explicitly in their public communications.”

According to the letter, the UN humanitarian reports continue to document the daily cuddles in daily mass, widespread destruction and interruptions in humanitarian assistance, resulting in forced hunger, death and displacement.

The document makes the following appeals to the institution’s management:

Legal characterization. Employees emphasize that, based on the evidence available and the authorized evaluations of experts appointed by the UN, as well as legal professionals, the legal threshold provided for in the genocide convention has been reached. Therefore, install the UN office to evaluate these conclusions and to publicly declare legal characterization.

Recognition of delay. The team asks the UN office to recognize concerns about the delay in taking a clear and public position on the situation in Gaza and its impact on confidence on the institution’s leadership.

Prevention and transfer of weapons. Employees request that the UN publicly press states and other entities to suspend the sale and transfer of weapons, as well as logistics or financial support related to Israeli authorities, which is a clear violation of international law.

According to them, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has a “strong legal and moral responsibility to denounce acts of genocide.” “The UN was founded after World War II, including the Holocaust, with the aim of preventing such atrocities from repeating themselves,” they warn. “Failing to denounce a genocide ongoing compromises the credibility of the UN and the human rights system itself,” they said.
