Washington sues Trump government for national guard mobilization

“Armed soldiers should not be policing US citizens on American soil,” Schwalb said in an X post.

“The forced military occupation of the district of Columbia violates our local autonomy and our basic freedoms. This needs to end.”

Last month, Trump sent National Guard troops to Washington, saying that they would “restore law, order and public safety.” The president also placed the Metropolitan Police Department of the Capital District under direct federal control.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said the president acted within his legal authority by sending troops to protect federal assets and assist law enforcement.

“This lawsuit is nothing more than another attempt-to the detriment of DC residents and visitors-to undermine the president’s highly successful operations to end DC violent crimes,” Jackson said in a statement.

In June, Trump put the California National Guard under federal control and sent it to Los Angeles, despite the objections of the state governor, Gavin Newsom.
