Trump criticizes Bolsonaro and USA conviction promise retaliation after STF's decision

United States President Donald Trump harshly criticized the Supreme Court (STF) decision that condemned former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to 27 years and 3 months in prison for coup attempted. Commenting on the case on Thursday (11), Trump classified the sentence as “very terrible” and said he was “very dissatisfied”.

“I know President Bolsonaro, not so well, but I know him as a country leader. I’ve always considered him very correct, a remarkable man. I think it’s a terrible thing. Very terrible. I think it’s very bad for Brazil,” Trump said, leaving the White House towards New York.

Lawyers said they respected STF’s decision, but stated that 27-year-old conviction is disproportionate and insisting that former president did not participate in a coup plan

The US president compared Bolsonaro’s situation to the lawsuits he himself faces in the US, suggesting that both would be victims of political persecution. Speech occurs amid growing tension between the two countries, aggravated by the tariffs imposed by Trump in July and the rhetoric adopted by his team.

“Proper Answer”

The harder tone, however, came from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who published his account on Network X (former Twitter) a direct threat:

“The political persecution of the human rights violator Alexandre de Moraes continues. He and other STF members have unfairly decided on the arrest of Jair Bolsonaro. The United States will respond adequately to this witch hunt.”

Rubio had already been responsible for articulating sanctions against Moraes in July, when the Trump government included the minister’s name on a list of foreign authorities accused of “violations of civil freedoms.”

Current positioning expands the belligerent tone of American foreign policy under Trump and suggests possible new political, commercial or diplomatic sanctions.

Itamaraty react

The statement was immediately answered by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, which considered the position of the US Secretary as an attempt at intimidation and interference in the country’s internal affairs.

“Threats such as the one done today by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in a demonstration that attacks Brazilian authority and ignores the facts and the blunt evidence of the case, will not intimidate our democracy,” Itamaraty said in an official note.
