Europeans propose commercial sanctions against Israel and ‘extremist ministers’
Today, the European market is the largest destination for Israel’s exports and represents a third of everything the country sells to the world, with 42 billion euros. It is estimated that the measures would cost 227 million euros a year to Israeli entrepreneurs.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that “the horrible events that occur daily in Gaza have to cease.”
“An immediate ceasefire, unrestricted access to all humanitarian aid and the release of all hostages maintained by Hamas,” he said.
“The European Union remains the largest donor of humanitarian aid and an unwavering defender of the two -state solution. Reflecting these commitments in principle and taking into account the serious developments in the West Bank, we propose to suspend commercial concessions with Israel, sanction extremist ministers and violent settlers and suspend bilateral support to Israel, without affecting our work with Israelite civil society or With Yad Vashem, “he explained.
EU imports from Israel totaled 15.9 billion euros by 2024, led by transport machinery and equipment (7 billion euros, 43.9%) and chemicals (2.9 billion euros, 18%).
The European Commission also determined the immediate end of bilateral support to the Israeli government, worth 10 million euros.
