Padilha states that Brazil will not go to business war with Trump

Health Minister Alexandre Padilha had his circulation restricted to only five blocks in New York during his participation in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The information is from S.Paulo Folha.

According to the newspaper, the measure was imposed by the United States government, which granted the visa for its entrance, but limited its travels in the city, including routes between its hotel, the UN headquarters and the Brazilian mission.

After impasse, USA release visa for Padilha to attend official events

Revocation of visas had reached the minister’s relatives and was reversed after pressure from Itamaraty

Padilha, who was the target of sanctions for his performance in the creation of the Mais Médicos program during the Dilma Rousseff administration, was visa revoked by Trump in 2024, which prevented him from obtaining new permission to travel to the US.

The Brazilian government requested a visa in August so that the minister could attend international events, such as the meeting of the Pan American Health Organization in Washington and the UN General Assembly in New York, where he should discuss chronic diseases.

Despite an international agreement of 1947 that obliges the United States to allow the circulation of foreign authorities in the UN district, the US government has imposed restrictions on representatives of sanctioned countries such as Iran, Venezuela and North Korea.

The tension between Brazil and the United States intensified with the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, Trump’s ally, who classified the process as a “witch hunt.”

In retaliation, the US government applied sanctions, including high rates and suspension of visas to ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and the Brazilian Executive. Alexandre de Moraes, STF Minister, was also the target of financial punishments via Magnitsky Law.
