Impeachment is not a shelf product to take who you don’t like, says Barroso

Impeachment is not a shelf product to take who you don't like, says Barroso

Supreme Court President Luís Roberto Barroso said that “impeachment is not a shelf product for you to take out of public life who you don’t like,” when asked about the pockets plan to elect sufficient senators to approve the impeachment of court ministers, especially Alexandre de Moraes, from 2027.

“Impeachment is something serious that you do and that you apply when the person has committed a crime of responsibility, something rare, exceptional, out of standard, and I find this speech very wrong,” the minister said, in an interview with the program Rodfrom TV Cultura.

Barroso also said that “if the former president (Jair Bolsonaro) has supporters and getting them to the Senate, it is part of the democratic life.” Still according to the minister, a conservative congress does not scare him. “Doing impeachment of Supreme Minister makes no sense and is an ugly way of doing politics.”

In another analogy, Barroso said impeachment “is a way for you, instead of playing the game, you want to take off the field you don’t like.”

Cost of the Judiciary

The president of the ST recognized that the judiciary is expensive -costs 1.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) -but “is the most capillarity institution in the country”, which would justify the high cost. “The Brazilian judiciary costs the cost of the state’s presence across the country and a presence that makes a lot of difference in people’s lives,” the minister said in the interview that took place on Monday night, 22.

Barroso pointed out that any abuse should be fought, but defended the magistrates’ high salaries as a way to recruit the best professionals. “If you do not pay the judges well, you do not recruit the best names for the judiciary, you stay with what is left. I do not want what is left. You have to pay well, but you have to pay well within the legislation,” he said.
