Moraes authorizes a prayer group to Bolsonaro’s house in house arrest

BySimon Rousseau Posted onSeptember 23, 2025 12:31 pm

Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) authorized that a prayer group visit former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) at his residence on Wednesday, September 24. Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since August 4, by determination of Moraes himself, after breaking the court order that prohibited him from using social networks.

According to the minister’s decision, 16 people were allowed to attend the religious meeting at the former president’s house. Among the members are names already linked to meetings organized by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, who is part of the group in question.

Moraes stressed that all prisoners, provisional or definitive, are entitled to religious assistance, according to the Federal Constitution and the Law of Criminal Executions. However, it determined that the prayer group cannot be used as a pretext for visits outside the religious scope or to improperly broaden the list of authorized.

In addition, all visits must follow the conditions previously established by the Court, including surveys in vehicles entering and leaving the former president’s residence.

In recent weeks, Moraes had already released similar meetings at Bolsonaro’s residence. After Michelle’s public complaints about alleged religious persecution, the minister pointed out that “there is no obstacle” for the realization of domestic cults and that the practice is part of the constitutional right of religious assistance
