Dispute between Renan and Lira for the exemption of IR exposes political feud in Alagoas
Political disaffected in Alagoas, Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) and Arthur Lira (PP-AL) vie for protagonism in Congress for the approval of the income tax exemption for those who earn up to R $ 5,000. The race to first approve the project that goes to the sanction goes through the disagreements between the two parliamentarians in the state.
Planalto sources said they supported and cheered for the project reported by Lira, as it is the article sent by the government. But behind the scenes, they also have the pressure of Renan’s proposal to make the House meet the deadline. The reason is that, in the last week, the House prioritized proposals such as the PEC of Armage and Amnesty, to the detriment of the government’s agenda.

The bill reported by Calheiros was approved this morning (24), in a terminative basis, in the Senate Commission of Economic Affairs (CAE) and now goes to the House.
Already the project reported by Lira, which is authored by the government, was approved in the special committee and opened a deadline for amendments yesterday (23). And is committed to the mayor, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), to put the proposal in a plenary vote next Wednesday (1).
Arthur Lira stressed that he is within the scheduled schedule for the vote. “We seek neutrality, the tax justice, all the changes that were built and we will make the debate as technician as possible,” said the rapporteur after meeting of leaders with Motta.
In the Senate, after CAE approval, Calheiros said the decision was a response to the House’s delay to vote on the government’s proposal. The opinion is an alternative version to Senator Eduardo Braga’s original text (MDB-AM), presented in 2019 and which was only now placed in vote.
The two projects made the income tax due to those who receive up to R $ 5 thousand reais per month. In addition, it partially reduces the tax of those who receive between R $ 5,000 and R $ 7,350, proportionally.
Today, it is only exempt from IR who earns up to two minimum wages, ie R $ 3,036 per month, for the current value. Proposals also predict charges for those who earn over $ 50,000 per month to make compensation.
