64% of Brazilians reject amnesty to the January 8 prisoners, it can be shown

Most voters of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) and former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) stand against amnesty to prisoners in Brasilia, on January 8, 2023. The data are from the Powerdate research, conducted between September 27 and 29.

According to the survey, 74% of voters who voted for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) in 2026 reject forgiveness to those involved, against 55% of those who support former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Nevertheless, in both groups there are relevant installments favorable to the measure: 20% of Lula’s voters and 33% of Bolsonaro.

The survey shows a significant turn between Lulis throughout the year. In March 2025, before the STF trial that sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and 3 months in prison, 37% of the petista voters supported the amnesty. Now the rate has dropped 17 percentage points to 20%.

The rejection between Lulis rose in the same period: it went from 54% in March to 74% in September, an increase of 20 percentage points.

Among Bolsonaro voters, the variations were smaller and within the margin of error. Forgiveness support lightly retreated from 36% to 33%, while rejection rose from 49% to 55%.

In the whole of the population, the amnesty support decreased and rejection grew. In March, 51% were against forgiveness. In September, the number rose to 64%, an increase of 13 points in six months.

The powerful research listened to 2,500 people 16 years or older in 178 municipalities, in the 27 federation units. The error margin is 2 percentage points, more or less.
