Detained by Israel, PT deputy has been incommunicable for 40 hours, says cabinet

Federal Deputy Luizianne Lins (PT-CE) has been incommunicable for about 40 hours, according to her office on Friday (3). The parliamentarian was part of the Global Sumud flotilha, a group of ships that brought humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and was intercepted by the Navy of Israel in international waters. Another 14 Brazilians are also detained.

According to the official note of the office, Luizianne and the other passengers were transferred to the Ktzoit Detention Center, located about 30 km from the Egyptian border. The statement states that they should still receive consular visits from the Brazilian Embassy, ​​but with no defined time.

In a statement, the Global Sumud flotilla said that Israeli naval forces had illegally intercepted all 42 ships

“The Brazilian government deplores the military action of the government of Israel, which violates rights and endangers the physical integrity of protesters in peaceful action,” Itamaraty said in a statement. The ministry said it accompanies the case “with concern” and that, in the current context, Israel is responsible for the security of the detainees.

Luizianne’s office reported that lawyers of the humanitarian mission are providing legal assistance to Brazilians, while the Brazilian consular service checks the conditions of physical integrity and safety.

The parliamentarian, former mayor of Fortaleza and in her second term in the House, published a video on social networks before interception, claiming to have been “kidnapped by Israeli occupation forces.”

The episode occurs amid the aggravation of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israeli restrictions have made it difficult to enter food, medicines and fuel. Brazil, through Itamaraty, has reinforced requests for the opening of humanitarian corridors and the protection of civilians.
