Gleisi criticizes “small, very rich part of the country” after the government’s defeat in MP

The minister of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, said this Wednesday, 8, that “it was clear that the small, very rich part of the country does not allow its privileges to be touched”. The minister’s criticism was made because of the defeat suffered by Palácio do Planalto in the provisional measure with collection and expense containment measures to compensate for setbacks in the IOF increase promoted by the government.

Gleisi directed the attack at what he called “a very rich part of the country”. At no point did he mention Congress, specific parties or politicians.

“Today it became clear that the small, very rich part of the country does not allow their privileges to be touched. They do not want to pay taxes like the majority of citizens. And they do not want the government to have resources to invest in policies for the population. Whoever voted in the Chamber to overturn the MP that taxed the super rich voted against the country and the people”, said the minister in a publication on the social network X.

Earlier this Wednesday, PT members explicitly blamed the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), in addition to the presidents of the PP, Ciro Nogueira (PI), and União Brasil, Antônio Rueda. They said that it was thanks to their coordination that the government was facing difficulties in approving the MP.

The criticism made by Gleisi went in another direction. It follows the speech of the richest against the poorest, made by the government a few months ago just when the increase in the IOF began to be discussed. At the time, the government achieved victories on social media with this narrative, even though, in practice, the middle class was impacted by the increase in the IOF, and not just the richest.
