Hamas calls on Trump to force Israel to comply with peace agreement
Hostage exchange must take place within 72 hours of implementation of the agreement. According to AFP, the Palestinians who can be released are divided between those sentenced to life imprisonment and those detained by Israel since the beginning of the conflict.
Qatari mediator said more information will be announced later. “The mediators announce that tonight an agreement was reached on all provisions and implementation mechanisms of the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which will lead to the end of the war, the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners and the entry of humanitarian aid. Details will be announced later,” wrote Majed Al Ansari, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
20 Israeli hostages are reportedly still alive after two years in captivity. Their health status, as well as their fate, however, is uncertain. In some cases, hostages believed to be alive were returned to Israel in a coffin, such as French-Israeli Ohad Yahalomi in February.
Trump may go to the Middle East
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump spoke about the possibility of peace in the Middle East and said he could travel to the region. “I was talking to people in the Middle East about the potential peace agreement for the Middle East. ‘Peace for the Middle East’. That’s a beautiful phrase,” he told reporters at the White House.
Maybe I’ll go there sometime later in the week, maybe on Sunday. Negotiations are going well, dealing with Hamas and many other countries. Nothing like this has happened before. If that’s the case, we’ll probably leave on Sunday, maybe Saturday, maybe a little later than Saturday night, but that seems to be our schedule.
