Janja announces that Brazil will send humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip

First Lady Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, stated that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ordered the sending of food, medicine and basic necessities to the Gaza Strip.

“At a time when millions of Palestinians are returning to the ruins of their homes, trying to resume their lives, despite the enormous losses they have experienced in the last two years, they need more than solidarity, they need support actions, both material and political, so that the agreed ceasefire is definitively fulfilled,” he said, at the closing of the World Food Forum, at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in Rome, Italy.

In her speech, the Brazilian first lady stated that access to food for millions of people is hampered today by climate change and its extreme events such as droughts, floods and changes in rain cycles, but also by geopolitical issues, such as armed conflicts and forced displacement.

“Whether due to the climate or wars, profound malnutrition has caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, especially children. Palestine and Sudan are still examples of the use of hunger as a weapon of subjugation and exploitation,” he said.

“These are crises that cause immense shame to us as humanity, and in which we are not acting with the haste and intensity necessary to resolve.”

Janja criticized the stance of the richest countries, which he stated were not fulfilling their promises to contribute to multilateral funds and organizations. In this context, he said that the worsening of resource cuts for humanitarian aid and development in recent years further deepens this crisis scenario.
