Mayor of Rio supports police operation that left 64 dead

The mayor of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, recently took to social media to support the state government’s actions against organized crime, which have already left at least 64 dead and 821 arrested in the police operation Contenção, in Complexos da Penha and Alemão, since Tuesday morning (28).

“The first message I would like to convey to you is that Rio de Janeiro will not and cannot be held hostage by criminal groups that seek to spread fear through the streets of our city”, he declared, through the X platform. He said that he has been following the operation since the beginning of the afternoon. “It is up to the public authorities to be ruthless against criminal groups that seek to frighten the population and workers”, he added, at the end of the short video.

In his speech, the mayor also said that municipal services will operate until the end of the day.

The police’s objective is to carry out arrest warrants against members of the Comando Vermelho (CV) — 30 of them from other states — hiding in the two sets of favelas

“I ordered all municipal bodies to function normally and provide support to the population in case of need.” He guaranteed that the BRT, the express bus corridor, is operating normally.

Paes’ decision to keep services open and support police action, however, was widely questioned in the mayor’s own profile.

“Putting the lives of other workers at risk. This view of work performance is irritating, sickening and murderous,” said the Death or Love account. Only essential services should operate. Workers are people and have families.” The Zilda Arns health center, in Alemão, closed its activities at 2 pm.

Paes was also criticized by people trying to return home.

“Eduardo Paes, I’m stuck in Gávea. Several Redentor buses at the final stop simply decided to stay in the garage”, reported @zicozismo. @ Garato dos dados said that people are afraid to return to the community where they live. “This video and attitude are ridiculous, Comando Vermelho closed the avenues and showed that it does affect the whole of Rio de Janeiro. The workers are the main hostages”, assessed @Ped_Luc.

In neighborhoods in the north, such as Tijuca, businesses closed their doors, as can be seen in videos of Praça Saenz Peña, posted on social media, with people hurriedly leaving the streets.

We also saw municipal buses stopped and cars going the wrong way in greater Tijuca.

Still in Complexo do Alemão, the main road, Estrada do Itararé, had businesses closed, as reported by the newspaper A Voz das Comunidades. The region is deserted.

Sem Censura debater and popular communicator Jota Marques reported that he has been trying to return home for 1h30, in Cidade de Deus, in the west zone.

“Thousands of workers are in the same situation — or worse. Buses crossed in the streets, armed confrontation, suspended lines. Teachers and children trapped in schools”, reported he, who was once a guardianship counselor. “No app-based car (accepts rides), and today I refuse to get on a motorbike. I will walk whatever it takes, but no one will be able to say that they mistook my fanny pack for a rifle, nor my (black) body for that of a criminal,” he added.
