Tarcísio tries to get closer to Fachin after attacks on the STF on 7/9
Before the former president’s conviction, the governor of São Paulo appealed to court ministers to return Bolsonaro’s passport so he could go to the United States to negotiate with President Donald Trump to revoke the tariff. Members of the court considered the attitude inappropriate.
The relationship imploded once and for all on Sete de Setembro, when Tarcísio spoke at an event on Avenida Paulista called by pastor Silas Malafaia. From the top of a platform, he defended amnesty for those convicted of attempted coups and said that no one could tolerate the “tyranny” of Alexandre de Moraes any longer.
On the day of Fachin’s inauguration, Tarcísio went to Bolsonaro’s house, who is under house arrest. “I’m visiting a friend, an important person, I’m considerate. It’s a difficult time. We’re here to provide support, without any kind of interest,” he said.
On his visit to the STF, Tarcísio will be accompanied by the Attorney General of the State of São Paulo, Inês Coimbra, and the head of the São Paulo government office in Brasília, Vicente Santini. The duo could discuss legal issues with the ministers, but Tarcísio took the opportunity to try to bring the Court closer together.
A healthy relationship with the Judiciary is an important political calculation for Tarcísio, who has not lost hope of running for President of the Republic in 2026. During the campaigns, Fachin will be the president of the STF and Nunes Marques will command the TSE (Superior Electoral Court). It will be up to the two courts to judge candidates’ actions and causes related to the dispute.
The meeting with Nunes Marques will focus on discussing tax benefits. The minister is the rapporteur of a direct unconstitutionality action on the Subsidies Law. Approved at the end of 2023, the legislation changes the rules for taxation of tax incentives granted by states via ICMS.
