Commission approves energy MP without mandatory contracting of gas thermal plants

SÃO PAULO (Reuters) – Congress’ joint commission for provisional measure 1,304, which deals with issues in the electricity and gas sectors, approved this Thursday an expanded version of the text originally sent by the government, with measures included by parliamentarians to benefit coal and biomass thermoelectric plants, but without the compulsory contracting of natural gas plants.

The obligation to contract gas thermal plants, which had also been included in the text of the MP by parliamentarians, was overturned after an agreement with the government, according to Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP), government leader in Congress.

The MP’s rapporteur, senator Eduardo Braga (MDB-AM), said that he agreed with the removal of the devices for gas thermal plants as this same issue will be considered by Congress on another front, that of the government’s vetoes to the law on offshore wind energy.

These vetoes began to be evaluated by Congress in June, but some remained pending, including the one dealing with gas plants.

Published by the federal government in July, aiming to create a ceiling for billion-dollar charges charged to consumers on their electricity bills, MP 1,304 needs to be approved by the plenary sessions of the Chamber and the Senate by November 7th to avoid losing validity.
