Absent from COP, Trump criticizes event and denounces deforestation
In the post, he mentions a report from Fox News, allied with the Trump administration, which showed how the road was built and how it forced authorities to cut down trees.
Trump, however, made no reference to the fact that deforestation has fallen in Brazil in recent years and that it was precisely under the government of his ally, Jair Bolsonaro, that rates reached unprecedented levels.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had invited Trump to Belém. But the American delegation did not even travel to the event. Trump left the Paris Agreement and, in his UN speech in September, denounced environmentalists for allegedly misrepresenting data on global warming.
His denialist attitude generated criticism from governments and activists.
In the report, Fox News says that the event is turning into “a disaster” and cites the fact that 100,000 trees would have been felled.
The report also highlights that few countries have committed to actions to reduce emissions.
