Eduardo Bolsonaro's mandate at risk: faults, threats to the PF and even “insider trading”

Federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) stated this Monday, 17th, via social media, that he feels proud to have been made a defendant by the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

Last week, the First Panel of the STF decided, unanimously, to receive the complaint presented by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) against the deputy for obstruction in the coup plot process.

The President is expected to discuss the issue again this week, before leaving for South Africa, where he will participate on the 22nd and 23rd in the Brics summit.

Case rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes was the first to vote and defended the opening of criminal action against Eduardo. He was accompanied by ministers Flávio Dino, Cristiano Zanin and Carmem Lúcia.

“Being called a defendant in a country where this same Supreme Court, which is prosecuting me, releases criminals is a source of pride,” wrote the deputy.

He added: “And those who celebrate this news are poor in spirit, fruits of their own ignorance. May God have mercy.”

According to the PGR complaint, Eduardo Bolsonaro and blogger Paulo Figueiredo articulated, in the United States, sanctions against STF ministers.

In the letter, the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, states that the campaign sought to pressure the Court not to convict former President Jair Bolsonaro in the process over the attempted coup. Bolsonaro was sentenced by the court’s first group to 27 years and 3 months in prison.

For Gonet, it was proven that Eduardo and Figueiredo resorted to contacts with US President Donald Trump to “embarrass the jurisdictional performance” of the STF.

With the opening of criminal proceedings, the Supreme Court now has the possibility of requesting the extradition of the deputy even before the judgment on the merits. Extradition may be requested not only to serve a sentence, but also to prosecute the case itself.

The procedures would depend on the cooperation of the Trump administration, which even sanctioned STF ministers, canceling visas and imposing financial restrictions based on the Magnitsky Law.
