Nominated to the STF, Messias praises Alcolumbre and will listen to senators’ ‘concerns’
After being nominated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, released a public note addressed to the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), who is responsible for guiding his hearing in the House. In the note, Messias said that he has a “healthy, frank and friendly” relationship with Alcolumbre, for whom he has “great admiration and appreciation”. Alcolumbre defended the name of senator Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) to fill the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso in the Court.
The AGU said that it will seek out each of the senators to listen “carefully to their concerns about the Justice of our Country” and present their perspectives that they should take to the Supreme Court, if approved, ‘to act there in defense of our Federal Constitution”.
“Beginning the first week after my appointment, I feel obliged to address the President of the Federal Senate, Senator Davi Alcolumbre, to offer myself for his constitutional scrutiny”, said Messias in the note. “I also do so to recognize and praise the important role that President Alcolumbre has played as a member of the House, which he now presides over for the second time, acting as an authentic leader of the National Congress, attentive to high decision-making processes, in favor of our Country.”
