Alcolumbre criticizes “interference” in Jorge Messias’ hearing process

The president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), raised the tone this Sunday (30) by accusing the federal government of interfering in the schedule defined by the House for the hearing of Jorge Messias, chosen by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to occupy a seat in the Federal Supreme Court.

According to the Folha de S. PauloAlcolumbre’s assessment is that the delay in sending mandatory documents creates unnecessary noise and puts pressure on the legislative calendar.

Although Messias’ name was made official by Lula and published in the Official Gazette, the necessary paperwork to begin the analysis by the Constitution and Justice Commission has not yet reached the Senate. Without negative certificates, professional information and other records, the hearing scheduled for December 10th cannot be held.

In a note, Alcolumbre stated that the Senate has the autonomy to define its schedule and that any attempt to suggest adjustments outside the constitutional rules constitutes undue interference. He highlighted that the established deadline follows the pattern of previous hearings and prevents the vote from being postponed until 2026.

The president of the Senate also refuted the interpretation that differences between the Legislative and Executive branches would be resolved by exchanging positions or releasing amendments. According to him, this is a strategy to institutionally demoralize those who disagree with the government.

Alcolumbre recalled that the prerogative to nominate ministers to the STF is exclusive to the President of the Republic, but that approval — or rejection — rests with the Senate, and that each Branch must act within the limits defined by the Constitution.
