Chamber blocks salary of Ramagem, fugitive in the USA, after STF conviction

The Chamber of Deputies blocked this Monday (1st) the payment of the salary of federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ), according to information obtained by the G1. The blockade occurred in compliance with a determination by the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The process takes place in secret.

Ramagem was sentenced to 16 years in prison for an attempted coup d’état, but is on the run in the United States. He left the country before the conclusion of the coup plot trial.

The document also authorizes the STF to officially initiate criminal proceedings, which makes Eduardo formally responsible for the crime charged.

When his departure from Brazil became public, Ramagem stated that he would continue to act normally as a parliamentarian. However, the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), approved an opinion that prohibits deputies from voting from abroad.

In addition to the salary, the Chamber also blocked Ramagem’s parliamentary quota, according to the investigation. G1. This quota is an extra amount that parliamentarians receive monthly for expenses related to the exercise of their mandate.

Alexandre Ramagem was general director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) during the Jair Bolsonaro government and was elected federal deputy in 2022.

Upon being sentenced to prison, Ramagem was also sentenced to loss of office, but the Chamber understands that the revocation needs to be confirmed by his peers in the Legislature.

Like Ramagem, Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) and Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) are also outside Brazil and had their salaries cut in response to legal proceedings, although they are not involved in the trial of the coup plot.
