Alckmin: “It was important to remove Moraes from the Magnitsky Law; it is an act of justice”
The Vice President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin, classified as “important” and “an act of justice” the removal of the name of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, from the sanctions of the Magnitsky Law.
Speaking to journalists recently, in São Paulo, Alckmin also stressed that President Lula has always made it clear in negotiations with his United States counterpart, Donald Trump, his intention to review not only the tariffs imposed on Brazil, but also the sanctions caused by the application of American legislation.

“It was an act of justice, a recognition of the work of the Brazilian Supreme Court, so we are always happy to see justice prevail,” said Alckmin. “From President Lula’s first telephone conversation with President Trump, he highlighted the need to change the application of the Magnitsky law. I was on his side and I listened”, he detailed.
Asked whether the federal government expects “new gestures” from the USA, the vice president responded that both countries have “an avenue” for dialogue, repeating that the bilateral relationship must be “win-win”.

Alckmin also commented on the approval of the Bill that changes the dosimetry of the sentence for those convicted of the attempted coup d’état and the abolition of the democratic rule of law. For him, changes in legislation like this harm the view that public opinion and the population have about the functioning of Justice in the country.
“I think we should never make legislative changes based on momentary issues. Legislation must have stability, it must be more structural. It must not be motivated by local issues. On the other hand, it also reinforces a feeling in public opinion that when it’s a simpler person, it’s tough. But for white-collar crime, for the most powerful, it slows down.”
Elections
When asked if he intends to run in the elections for the government of São Paulo next year, Alckmin disagreed and simply said that it was too early to make any decision. “We have to wait. It’s almost a year away. In politics, that’s a century”, he stressed.
