Moraes schedules Bolsonaro's medical examination for the 17th after defense requests surgery

The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes scheduled the medical examination for December 17th that will assess the health status of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The order was published this Monday, the 15th.

The order records that, in the medical examination carried out to execute the arrest warrant, on November 22, there was no indication of any condition that would justify the need for immediate surgical intervention.

Lawyers say recent exams indicate immediate need for intervention

Moraes also highlighted that the tests presented by the defense are not current and that, at the time they were carried out, they did not indicate the need for urgent surgery.

Before setting the date for the examination, the minister had already authorized, at the request of the lawyers, examinations to be carried out on the premises of the Federal Police Superintendence in the Federal District. Now, it has ordered that copies of all exams and reports be sent to the experts responsible for the evaluation.

The examination will be carried out by experts from the Federal Police at the National Institute of Criminalistics. After this stage, the process must immediately return to completion for a new decision by the rapporteur.

The former president’s defense again asked the STF, this Monday, for authorization to carry out surgery and the granting of house arrest, on the grounds of worsening of the former president’s health condition.

Lawyers maintain that recent exams would indicate the need for surgical intervention and that the treatment could not be carried out in a closed regime.

In the order, however, Moraes highlights that there is, to date, no official medical evidence that justifies the adoption of exceptional measures. The minister highlighted that the assessment of possible surgery or change in the sentencing regime will depend on the result of the official medical examination.
